Feeling Rich

My son had a soccer tournament in Salina this past Saturday.  Although the day started out with rain, it stopped before the second game.  We had several hours before the last game, so after eating we went to the mall.  After going in a few stores and walking the length of the mall, we decided to leave.

As we pulled out of the parking lot I said to him, “That made me feel rich.”  He gives me a look like I’m weird and says, “How?  We didn’t buy anything.  If we had bought a ton of stuff then I’d understand you feeling rich.”

“That’s just it, I didn’t need anything in the mall.  I have what I need, and that makes me feel rich.”  I think he understood.  Having my necessities met, or at least my perceived necessities, gave me a wonderful feeling of freedom at the store.  We headed for the soccer field.

It was a beautiful day.  There was the slightest breeze with a clover smell.  The temperature must have been low 80’s.  There are few trees next to the fields are parking lot, and the ones that are there are small.  But we found one.  He took a nap in the shade on a blanket.  I sat in my lawn chair and read a book and every so often looked up at the grass, trees and sky–feeling rich.
